Tess Chakkalakal will be our speaker this year. She will be talking about Hawthorne and Friendship. Tess is an associate professor of Africana Studies and English at Bowdoin College.
She is the creator and co-host of a new podcast series called “Dead Writers: Great American Authors and Where They Lived,” scheduled to air on Maine Public Radio this summer. This podcast will include an episode on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s boyhood home in Raymond, Maine.
Tess’s latest book, a biography of the author Charles W. Chesnutt, will be coming out from St. Martin’s Press in February. Her previous books include Novel Bondage: Slavery, Marriage, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (Illinois, 2011) which earned the Robert K. Martin Prize for best book on American literature and “a must read” title by Choice. She is co-editor of Jim Crow, Literature, and the Legacy of Sutton E. Griggs and Imperium in Imperio by Sutton E. Griggs: A Critical Edition .
