The Hawthorne House was blessed with another international visitor! Yuko Tashima from Tokyo Japan wrote during the mid-summer asking for a tour. Our president Tom Ewig complied and helped Yuko visit Nathaniel Hawthorne’s boyhood home. Thank you Tom and special thanks to you ~ Yuko ~ for actively seeking our humble historical building. Yuko graciously shared her reflections:
I really appreciate the warm welcome I received during my visit to Hawthorne’s Boyhood Home on Friday. Since Hawthorne is known to have mentioned his idyllic life in Raymond as one of his happiest memories, I have always been curious to see what Raymond and his house looked like. It was truly a pleasure to finally visit and experience the house, and I was struck by its comfortable, cozy atmosphere, enhanced by the recent renovations. I’m also grateful to Mr. Ewig for taking me to Sebago Lake, providing me with so much information, and introducing me to references about Hawthorne’s life in Raymond and the research conducted on him there.
Tom Ewig responded: Yuko Tashima is very sweet, and she knows more about Hawthorne than I do! She has already read some of the books from our library. She took pictures of our library titles including the “Hester” title. Together we viewed beautiful Sebago Lake and the New Hampshire White Mountains over the lake.
