South African saxophonist/composer McCoy Mrubata will be performing in the USA with his colleague and friend Gary Wittner in the Spring of 2025. A recent recipient of the South African Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Kennedy Center International Arts Gold Medal, McCoy was a member of the legendary Hugh Masekela’s band in the 1990’s.
Guitarist Gary Wittner has performed on 5 continents, representing the USA as a Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador, Fulbright Specialist, and US Embassy Outreach Artist. Gary has performed with numerous jazz luminaries, and he also leads groups playing original instrumental and vocal jazz, Latin and Middle Eastern music. Gary is a music faculty member at the Univ. of S. Maine School of Music and Bowdoin College.

Watercolor workshops at the Hawthorne House

We welcome back Kathleen Gerdes and she will have a regular schedule of watercolor workshops April – October.
All workshops are on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The dates are below:
April 23rd, May 21st, June 25th, July 30th, August 20th,
September 24th, October 15th.
Cost: $35, includes all student supplies and materials.

Have you always wanted to learn the art of watercolor painting? Or do you want to brush up on your skills? Suitable for any skill level, Kathleen Gerdes’ watercolor workshop is coming to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Boyhood Home.
Designed to be a fun, stress-free community experience among fellow artists, Ms. Gerdes’ workshop will cover, step-by-step, what each student needs to know about paints, brushes, paper, and basic watercolor skills and techniques. Plenty of time will be offered to practice what you learn, and each student will leave with his or her own painting, along with the knowledge and skills needed to continue painting at home.
Kathleen is a local artist and has been painting for over 20 years. She believes that everyone is an artist and her love of teaching reflects that. Her work is unique, whimsical and she loves to paint everyday objects with lots of color.
